Protecting the Mississippi River begins with each of us. Engaging your love for the river and helping you turn it into positive action is one of our key goals.
Get your hands dirty Volunteer!
Friends of the Mississippi River wants to help put your love of the river to work. Channeling volunteer energy is vital for our work, whether its for on-the-ground work like habitat restoration, key support like keeping our office running, or big events like the Mississippi River Challenge.
- The majority of volunteers contribute their time and talents by participating in one or more of our 50+ volunteer events a year. Most are two to four hours in length and take place on weeknights or weekends. Visit our Events Calendar to see whats coming up!

Become a River Advocate
When it comes to policies that impact the river, the Mississippi needs friends. A wide range of legislatures, councils, boards, and agencies make vital decisions on a daily basis that impact the river for good or for ill. Through action alerts, issue updates, and guides to understanding policy, we work to keep you informed and offer ways to make your voice heard.
Visit our Take action section to learn more about how you can help shape policies that impact the river.
Do by learning
Its not all about work, of course. Our educational programs provide opportunities to learn about the rich history and ecology of the Mississippi River and how you can help improve its watershed. Bird hikes, history presentations, and other events lend context to our work and add to your appreciation for the Mississippi River, while native plant and raingarden workshops help home and business owners become better backyard stewards.
