Whose view? From where? — July 2014

Congratulations to five Mississippi Messages readers for guessing the correct location for last months photo. As Bill Gergen and Eric Otterness described, the picture is taken from the access road just below the Hastings Lock and Dam of the limestone cliffs on the east bank of the river. Jim Fitzpatrick noted that the river is still in flood stage in this picture. He is correct; FMR staff took the picture in late June. Tom Bell added, A hacking platform was installed some years ago for peregrine falcons, which was used and then not used for some years, but again this year peregrine falcons utilized the platform. Finally, Matthew Loyas warned, Be careful in this area on hot summer nights. The mayflies can hatch and pile up quickly, impacting roads in the area. As noted in this months phenology section, this is an indicator of good river water quality in the Hastings area.

About Whose view? From where?

Each month in this section, we feature a photo somewhere along the river corridor in the Twin Cities that is in some way significant or important or just plain scenic. Individuals may then e-mail us and identify the view and explain why they believe it is significant to the community or important to them personally. Well publish some of your responses in the next issue of Mississippi Messages, where we will also reveal the correct answer.
