Whose view? From where? — October 2014

Three responses were submitted this month, and all of them correctly identified key features in the view.

Matt Loyas was the only one to correctly identify where the photo was taken from, responding that, This months view is of Hastings again. You can see Lock and Dam 2 and the new bridge in the background. This view is looking down river from the east, possibly in the area of River Oaks.

Tom Bell recognized it was a view of the Highway 61 Bridge, but got a little turned around and incorrectly suggested The view this month was taken just down river from Hastings. But his commentary was right as rain when he added Certainly part of the significance is it shows the river and valley that is at or close to the down river end of the Critical Area and the National Park.

Brian Nerbonnes response suggested the view was from a nearby site, so he missed the mark slightly, but his knowledge of the area is obvious! He wrote, Octobers photo shows Lock and Dam #2, with the new Highway 61 bridge at Hastings in the background. The photo is taken from the bluff above the river where 3Ms Cottage Grove Plant is located. I believe FMR has been working with 3M to maintain a rare high-quality oak savannah on the property, a small piece of which can be seen in the foreground. In fact, this weeks Mississippi Messages newsletter highlights an FMR volunteer workday scheduled there on November 1!

River Oaks is a small 2.1 acre park in Cottage Grove that FMR is helping to restore to native plant communities. Learn more about it in last months article about the site.

About Whose view? From where?

Each month in this section, we feature a photo somewhere along the river corridor in the Twin Cities that is in some way significant or important or just plain scenic. Individuals may then e-mail us and identify the view and explain why they believe it is significant to the community or important to them personally. We'll publish some of your responses in the next issue of Mississippi Messages, where we will also reveal the correct answer.
