Whose view? From where? — November 2014

We received two correct responses this month that did a nice job of describing the special qualities of this favorite neighborhood site along the river.

Brian Nerbonne included some local lore in his response: This months picture looks like the natural area at West River Parkway and 36th St. in Minneapolis within Mississippi River Regional Park. The site is locally known as Giggly Hills, supposedly named for the laughter of kids sledding there. Its shaping up to be a good year for that!

In his response, Jonathan Riehle talked about bringing friends there to share the sites loveliness: This certainly looks like the prairie remnant along the Mississippi River near the intersection of West River Parkway and 36th Street East in Minneapolis. I live about a block away and this is a place I like to bring folks as we walk along the river.

The view last month featured the restored Oak Savanna along West River Parkway near East 36th Street in Minneapolis. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board began burning a small remnant prairie at the site in the 1970s and followed up with a major 10-acre restoration of the prairie and surrounding oak savanna in 1996 in partnership with the National Park Service. Since 2001, FMR has played a leadership role in ongoing restoration and management of the restored site working in collaboration with hundreds of Gorge Stewards volunteers, the park board, the Longfellow neighborhood and a long list of other partners and funders. About Whose view? From where?

Each month in this section, we feature a photo somewhere along the river corridor in the Twin Cities that is in some way significant or important or just plain scenic. Individuals may then e-mail us and identify the view and explain why they believe it is significant to the community or important to them personally. We'll publish some of your responses in the next issue of Mississippi Messages, where we will also reveal the correct answer.
