Working to protect the Mississippi River and its watershed in the Twin Cities area
Please note: This event has reached capacity and registration is no longer being taken.
Join the Mississippi River Gorge Stewards volunteers to help remove buckthorn along river gorge trails in the Seward neighborhood.
Buckthorn is an invasive woody species that degrades our local native plant communities and wildlife habitat. The rapidly spreading shrub is able to invade many different forest types, where it then crowds out native species such as young oaks and maples. Buckthorn is taking over high quality natural areas along the river gorge, but volunteers are making a difference!
Volunteers and Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board forestry crews have removed a large amount of buckthorn in the area. On November 1st we will work to continue and broaden these efforts by removing more of the invasive shrubs.
Volunteers will work closely with FMR staff, will be provided with tools and gloves and should be prepared to work on steep slopes and uneven terrain. Due to the tools and terrain, this event is not suitable for children.
To register, please contact Karen Solas, River Stewardship Coordinator, at (651) 222-2193 x16 or at ksolas[at]fmr.org by Wednesday, Oct. 29, 5 p.m. She will email details and directions, and then meet you at the event!
