Join dozens of volunteers as we remove garlic mustard from the beautiful river flats in south Minneapolis' Longfellow neighborhood.
Garlic mustard is an herbaceous exotic plant that is invading many areas of the River Gorge and out-competing native spring plant species. While extremely invasive, this plant is very easy to identify and pull by hand.
After a brief introduction to the area and training, volunteers will proceed to the river flats, known for its large sandy beaches and wonderful river-edge view. Working alongside FMR staff, they will remove the large spread of garlic mustard threatening the flats.
After just two hours of work, volunteers will see an immediate difference, and will help improve both wildlife habitat and water quality. (And after the event, volunteers can bring some garlic mustard home, using staff-provided recipes to turn this riverbank threat into a tasty pesto sauce.)
