Volunteer Mimi Hottinger in the demonstration prairie at Crosby Farm Park

Help tend the volunteer-planted demonstration native prairie at Crosby Farm Regional Park! Crosby Farm Park is a natural oasis in the heart of the city, nestled at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers. The park is home to 534-acres of floodplain forest and oak woodlands tucked under the bluffs of the Mississippi River. Wetlands surround Crosby Lake while limestone and sandstone outcroppings line the north side of the park.

The three-acre demonstration prairie where we will be focusing our work includes upward of 1,000 native prairie plants and a variety of species markers to educate and inform visitors. Volunteers will help weed and otherwise care for the planting and surrounding areas under the guidance of FMR staff.

As always, FMR will provide all training and supplies needed. All are welcome and encouraged to work at their own skill and comfort level. Registration is required and limited to 10 volunteers, in order to maintain a safe distance between individuals.

Ready to register?

To register, contact FMR Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator Sophie Downey at sdowney@fmr.org, 651.222.2193 x27, or by selecting Sophie by name under "Category" via the FMR contact form. Please include the name of the event, your name, address and phone number and the number in your party.

You will receive a confirmation email from sdowney@fmr.org within two business days. (If you don't, please check your spam folder.)

If you're under 18 and interested in volunteering without the company of your parent or guardian, please take a moment and have them fill out this brief minor permission form.

To maintain social distancing, our events are smaller than usual. When this event fills, we will start a waitlist, and if any spots open up volunteers will be added on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Can't make it?

To receive notices of future events, contact FMR Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator Sophie Downey at sdowney@fmr.org. Or, visit our Events Calendar for our most up-to-date listing of upcoming events. To receive a twice-a-month e-newsletter including all FMR activities and news, sign up for Mississippi Messages.

What about coronavirus?

We've modified our events this year to be smaller, and allow for individuals to work while safely six feet apart. All tools and gloves will be sanitized between events. Once registered, volunteers will receive a full list of safety precautions and guidelines.

We're watching the CDC and Minnesota Department of Health guidelines closely. If plans change based on their recommendations, FMR Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator Sophie Downey will email registrants with event updates. (Be sure to add sdowney@fmr.org to your contacts so updates don't land in spam.) And we'll update this page if anything changes.

We will offer gloves and hand sanitizer at the event. Volunteers are required to bring and wear their own mask.
