Vermillion River Tree Planting

Submitted by srich on Fri, Mar 14 - 12:31 PM

Help plant trees to improve trout habitat along the Vermillion River, an important tributary of the Mississippi River flowing through Dakota County.

Due to spring thaw-related concerns, this event has been delayed until the fall. Please consider another hands-on volunteer event on the FMR calendar.
* If you'd like to receive notices of future Vermillion Stewards events such as this, contact sue at
* We might be able to make the fall planting into a private group outing. So if you happen to be with a corporate or other group of 25 or more, based in the Vermillion Watershed (most of Dakota county), let us know if you'd like to work together to arrange an outing. Contact sue at

Join staff from the Vermillion River Watershed Joint Powers Organization, the City of Lakeville, and Friends of the Mississippi River to plant trees along Lakeville's South Creek, a tributary to the Vermillion River. The trees will provide additional habitat and will also provide shade to keep the water cool and protect the river's coldwater trout fishery. The tree planting is part of an experimental longer-term project (also involving native prairie and other plantings) that will stabilize the streambank and prevent erosion or sediment pollution.

The Vermillion River is a coldwater prairie river that runs through the heart of Dakota County. It is a major tributary of the Mississippi River and the only trophy trout stream located near a metropolitan area in the United States. This event is part of the Vermillion Stewards program, involving hundreds of volunteers in hands-on stewardship and educational programs throughout the Vermillion River's watershed. This planting is part of a multi-year project for the Vermillion River Watershed Joint Powers Organization.

There is not an actual address or park name for this natural area, but it is roughly a half hour from Mpls/St. Paul from the north and Hastings from the east. All registrants will be emailed detailed directions to the meeting spot.
