Help Protect Our Local Trout Stream, Vermillion River Buckthorn Haul [FULL]

Saturday, October 31, 2015 - 9:00am to Sunday, November 1, 2015 - 8:45am
This event has reached capacity and registrations are no longer being accepted. Thank you!

After a 15-minute hike, volunteers will haul out pre-cut buckthorn, a woody invasive chopped and lopped a few days before by Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Corps Minnesota crews.

Volunteers will be working in an Aquatic Management Area. AMAs are a special form of land protection meant to preserve shoreline property. With creek, lake and river shores being developed throughout the state, the AMA program helps Minnesota preserve public access as well as critical fish and wildlife habitat. The Vermillion River and this AMA is prized for its trophy brown trout — something unimaginable in 1960, when the water quality was so poor the stream was considered unfit for any game fish.

All supplies and training will be provided and volunteers will work closely with FMR Stewardship Coordinator Adam Flett and Mark Nemeth, a trout stream habitat specialist from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. This event is part of the Vermillion Stewards program, helping residents learn about the watershed while working to protect and enhance its unique natural resources. Everyone who signs up will be invited to help the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources survey trout and water quality at a special invite-only event next fall.
