Sign the petition: It's time for MN to salt smart for the river

Deicing salts applied to parking lots and walkways can melt snow and ice and keep us safe in winter. However, excess salts eventually wash into our waters where they harm fish, mussels and other river life. They also contaminate wells that supply drinking water in rural areas.

Unfortunately, salt is a permanent pollutant. Just 1 teaspoon of road salt irreversibly pollutes 5 gallons of water.

That’s why addressing salt or chloride pollution through advocacy, community events and education is a longstanding FMR priority.

What you can do

Over the years, the Minnesota Legislature has taken some FMR-backed steps to reduce salt contamination. But there is more work to do across the board.

Sign the petition below to let policymakers, elected officials and community leaders know that you support smart salting measures that can reduce salt pollution, keeping our communities safe and our river healthy.
