Taking place just off of West River Parkway, this cleanup is an Earth Day tradition in the Minneapolis River Gorge. People come from throughout the local river corridor, neighborhoods and metro area – individuals, families, small church, corporate and student or scout groups – to celebrate Earth Day and contribute to the health and vitality of the Mississippi River. All are welcome! This is a family-friendly event providing an excellent opportunity to get outside and work together to help improve this treasured area. We've returned to this site year after year and have noticed a dramatic improvement to the area thanks to dedicated volunteers like you!

After two years of virtual and limited space cleanups, we are happy to be planning an event that will hopefully be more similar to our pre-pandemic cleanups, though with safety measures in place, of course. We hope to see you in the River Gorge this spring!

This event is supported by the local neighborhood group, the Longfellow Community Council, and Longfellow area residents are encouraged to register! The event is also part of the Gorge Stewards program, which actively engages citizens throughout the Twin Cities in the stewardship of the national treasure that is the Mississippi River Gorge.

Accessibility

Our two locations for this cleanup are paved parking lots, easy access to paved and unpaved trails. Volunteers are encouraged to spread out and work wherever they feel comfortable. Paths are shared by walkers and bikers, but it is possible for volunteers to spend their entire cleanup on flat, paved trails.

Advanced registration for this event is not required, however, if you have a group of 10-20 people, please contact Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator Sophie Downey, sdowney@fmr.org or 651.222.2193 x27. For groups of 20+ please contact Aaron Briner, abriner@minneapolisparks.org or 612-230-6479 to be assigned a location that will better fit your group size.

To participate, simply show up at 9:30 a.m. at either location (E 36th St & W River Parkway or E 44th St & W River Parkway) to sign in with FMR staff. We'll provide all of the supplies, however, if you have your own gloves feel free to bring them along. Sturdy shoes are strongly suggested as well as dressing in layers for the weather.

What about COVID-19?

We will encourage wearing a mask while signing in, and while in close proximity to other volunteers. We will encourage social distancing while we work. We're watching the CDC and Minnesota Department of Health guidelines closely. If plans change based on their recommendations, FMR Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator Sophie Downey will email registrants with event updates. (Be sure to add sdowney@fmr.org to your contacts so updates don't land in spam.) And we'll update this page if anything changes.

We will offer gloves and hand sanitizer at the event.
