LGBTQIA2S+ Pride demonstration box planting on Nicollet Island

Volunteers tend to demonstration boxes on Nicollet Island
Our work takes place on Dakota land. Learn more.
Join us for a special evening during Pride Month to come together and revitalize the planting demonstration boxes in the Nicollet Island prairie. FMR is leading a multi-year restoration of the natural areas on the north half of Nicollet Island in partnership with the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization, Hennepin County and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. The restoration plan includes removal of invasive species, enhancement of degraded forest areas and the expansion of diverse grassland habitat, including two acres of native prairie where the demonstration boxes are located.
Together with the guidance of FMR staff, volunteers will dig in to plant grasses and wildflowers to provide examples of native prairie plantings to park users. These selected plants will give people ideas of what might provide good habitat in their own neighborhoods.
This event is for those who self-identify as LGBTQIA2S+, or as allies of the queer community! No experience is needed however, registration is required and capacity is limited. All tools, gloves and training will be provided.
Accessibility
The worksite for this event is flat, with gravel trails leading to the demonstration boxes. Planting is a lower impact activity that can be done while sitting down or kneeling. FMR will provide a few kneeling pads.
Pants are recommended.
