Lowry Avenue Bridge Imploded

The historic Lowry Avenue Bridge connecting Northeast and North Minneapolis fell into the Mississippi River after being imploded on Sunday, June 22.

The bridge, which was built in 1905 and last renovated in 1958, was closed in April, 2008 due to continued structural issues with one of the bridge piers.

A comment issued by Hennepin County stated Carl Bolander & Sons Co. of St. Paul are contracted to clear the main navigation channel within 24 hours of the implosion and that the steel is scheduled for removal from the river bed within one week.

A test piling to confirm foundational requirements for the new bridge will be installed after the river bed is cleared. The 32" piling will stand about 10 feet out of the water, and be marked according to United States Coast Guard standard.
