FMR helps create new Chimney Rock SNA

Chimney Rock SNA features sandstone formations, rolling wooded hills and oak savanna.

Over the last ten years FMR has helped create three Scientific and Natural Areas in Dakota County. SNAs have distinctive natural features and rare resources of exceptional scientific and educational value; while public, they are afforded the states highest level of protection. The first, Pine Bend Bluffs, protects Mississippi River bluff-land. The second, the Hastings Sand Coulee SNA, protects hundreds of acres of native prairie. The third, and new this month, Chimney Rock SNA was highlighted recently in the Star Tribune and features a distinctive sandstone spire as well as rolling wooded hills and oak savanna.

The preservation of Chimney Rock exemplifies FMRs unique partnership-building role. With support from Dakota County, FMR worked behind the scenes to reach out to the landowner and present information on protection options, and also brokered meetings with Minnesota Department of Natural Resources staff. Dakota County, the DNR and FMR each brought their strengths to this successful effort to protect this unique natural feature.
