FMR supports better feedlot rules for water quality
For the first time in 25 years, the state of Minnesota is seeking input on significantly changing its rules for feedlots.
Today, Minnesota is home to more than 18,000 animal feedlots, which, by some estimates, produce nearly 49 million tons of waste per year. This manure can be an important source of nutrients for growing crops. But when improperly applied, it can contaminate rivers, lakes, streams and groundwater. It can also make drinking water unsafe.
FMR Water Program Director Trevor Russel recently weighed in, calling for measures to strengthen prevention efforts and reduce unintended contamination of our waters. (Read more in FMR's full letter.)
