Amended football stadium plan for Nicollet Island is denied

In a repeat performance, the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) unanimously denied DeLaSalle High Schools application to amend its Certificate of Appropriateness for a football stadium on Nicollet Island. After denying a similar plan last Fall, DeLaSalle won approval for the project when it filed an appeal with the City Council, which overturned the HPCs decision.

The HPCs reason for denial this time around was relatively unchanged. The proposed football stadium would cause irreversible damage to the St. Anthony Falls Historic District, which is unacceptable when reasonable alternatives exist. FMR and numerous other groups gave testimony at the public hearing asking the HPC to deny the amended plan.

DeLaSalle has appealed the recent HPC decision and that appeal will be heard at the April 19 meeting of Minneapolis City Council Zoning and Planning Committee, 9:30 am at Minneapolis City Hall Council Chambers.

There is still a lawsuit in play over the approval from last Fall.
