Keep 'em Clean: Stencil St. Paul storm drains with FMR

Stenciling volunteers paint a river-friendly message near a storm drain

Volunteers stencil the message "Keep 'Em Clean — Drains to the River" near a St. Paul storm drain.

If you're looking for a great service outing that is educational, active, outdoors and helps our local waters, consider scheduling a storm drain stenciling outing or DIY kit check-out.

Using paint and stencils, volunteers mark storm drains with the message "Keep 'em Clean — Drains to the River (Lake or Creek)." Storm drains typically drain directly into waters, and it's how many of the top pollutants we find in the river get there. The message helps remind people about that connection.

As part of the outing, volunteers also pick up trash and distribute door-hangers to neighborhood homes and businesses.

FMR offers staff-led outings for larger groups or do-it-yourself stenciling kits for all group sizes. Both options are free, with all supplies and instructions provided. FMR can offer stencils that share the message in English, Hmong and Somali.

We are currently accepting requests for outings conducted by FMR staff (for groups of 25 or more volunteers) or DIY kit check-outs in August, September or October 2026.
