Remove garlic mustard at Hampton Woods Wildlife Management Area

Tuesday, May 13, 2025 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Hampton Woods Wildlife Management Area, Hampton
Volunteer pulls garlic mustard at Hampton Woods

Hampton Woods is the largest continuous oak forest in southern Dakota County, providing critical habitat for forest-dwelling animals, including rare resident and migratory birds. This site is especially important because much of the surrounding area is farmland.

Thanks to an FMR partnership with Dakota County, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and local landowners, 209 acres of Hampton Woods are permanently protected as a Wildlife Management Area.

We need volunteers to assist with hand-pulling invasive species from the forest floor. This May, we'll focus our efforts on removing garlic mustard. FMR staff will provide identification and removal guidance — no previous experience is necessary.

As always, all are welcome. However, space is limited, and registration is required. This event is part of the Vermillion Stewards program, engaging residents to learn about the watershed while working to protect and enhance its unique natural resources.

Accessibility

A long, brisk walk is required to get to the worksite, up to a half mile or more. Volunteers will work on fairly level terrain that also includes cut stumps, fallen trees and sometimes dense vegetation. Pulling garlic mustard can be done while kneeling or sitting down. Volunteers may be required to carry bags of garlic mustard a short distance out from the removal area.
