Native flowers such as prairie smoke help support pollinators

Join us to support pollinators and other wildlife by planting native shrubs and flowers at River Heights Park in Inver Grove Heights. This beloved 7.5-acre river bluff park provides much-needed wildlife habitat as part of the river corridor and Mississippi River flyway. Community members, including many FMR River Guardians, advocated for the preservation of this natural area when it was under consideration for housing development. Starting in 2018, FMR has hosted restoration events, including buckthorn removal and native prairie seed collection. FMR also offers pollinator monitoring opportunities at River Heights Park with our Pollinator Evaluation Program.

Together with the guidance of FMR staff, volunteers will plant native plant species, including gooseberry, serviceberry, nannyberry and milkweed.

All are welcome. No experience is needed. All tools, gloves and training will be provided. However, registration is required and capacity is limited.

Accessibility

River Heights Park is a city park with a mowed picnic area and walking trails. Please park along the side of the road. The closest bathroom facility is a gas station about two miles south. Please plan accordingly.

We recommend wearing long pants, long sleeves and sturdy, closed-toed shoes and boots. Planting will occur in the woodlands and savanna, which can be reached by walking less than a quarter mile along mowed trails. The planting itself will take place off-trail and will require volunteers to walk and kneel on uneven ground. Once at the planting location, the planting itself will be a low-intensity activity. FMR will provide a few kneeling pads. Watering the plants will be moderately strenuous, and that work will be shared between people able to carry up to 40 pounds of water in a bucket.
