Remove garlic mustard on the South Branch of the Vermillion River near Hastings
The South Branch of the Vermillion Aquatic Management Area lies along a beautiful, meandering branch of the Vermillion River between Hastings and Rosemount. Oak woodlands on rolling hills sit above the stream with diverse native prairie along its banks.
Garlic mustard has spread into the woodlands, and we'll pull and bag the plants to make space for native woodland plants to thrive.
To access the site, we'll walk along the fields of the Hmong-American Farmers Association, which will be planted with early-season crops.
All are welcome, but capacity is limited, and registration is required. As always, all tools and training will be provided, and volunteers are encouraged to work at their own pace and comfort level.
Accessibility
Pulling garlic mustard at this site is a moderate-intensity activity with a longer walk over uneven ground.
We'll meet at the small parking lot for the South Branch of the Vermillion AMA at the southwest corner of U.S. Highway 52 and 200th Street/County Road 66. From there, we'll carpool and park on a field road of the Hmong-American Farmers Association off U.S. Highway 52. Then we'll walk about 1/3 mile to our work area. The walk is along a field edge with some uneven ground, and our work area is off a wooded footpath.
The work area will have some downed trees, and there could be mosquitoes and ticks. Please wear sturdy footwear, long pants and a lightweight shirt with sleeves to protect your skin.
There are no restroom facilities at the site, so please plan ahead.
