February 23 open house on plans for Bureau of Mines property north of Fort Snelling

The public is invited to join the National Park Service in planning for the future of the former Bureau of Mines area just north of Fort Snelling. An open house will be held Monday, February 23, 2009 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on the first floor of the Veterans Affairs Hospital, at One Veterans Drive in Minneapolis.
As recently reported in Mississippi Messages, the land is expected to be transferred to the National Park Service for restoration and permanent stewardship as a river-related park.
The site currently houses several buildings which long were a research facility for the United States Bureau of Mines. However, the Department of Interiors preferred alternative for developing the site would remove all those buildings.
The project partners are winding down their environmental review of the site. The open house will allow the Park Service to present its progress and thinking about the site to date, and will allow the public to provide feedback on the ideas presented.
