Energy conservation rebates

Now is the time to insulate, caulk and do all you can to beat those winter heating blues — and take advantage of some significant tax credits. Conserving energy is not only good for our pocketbooks, its good for the Mississippi River. Most power plants burn coal, which releases sulfur dioxide, causing acid rain, and mercury, a neurotoxin that builds up in the fish and other creatures that call the Mississippi River home. From now until the end of the year, you can take a 2007 tax credit for tankless water heaters, replacement windows, insulation and more on your taxes. (A real credit deducted from the amount of taxes you owe, not a deduction that reduces your taxable income.)
