A new riverfront organization for Minneapolis?
A proposal to establish The Minneapolis Riverfront Corporation, a new nonprofit organization designed to support and coordinate continued riverfront revitalization, is going forward to the Capitol this spring. Both the City and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board voted to include the request on their list of legislative priorities for 2008.
A key focus of the new organization will be better coordination and alignment of the interests, goals and resources of various public agencies, civic organizations, citizens and other stakeholders. Minneapolis has had great success with redevelopment of the central riverfront, but implementation of Minneapolis Above the Falls Master Plan has been slow at best. The award-winning plan, which would revitalize the river north of downtown, calls for continuous parks and trails on both sides of the river, connections to local neighborhoods and new economic development.
FMR will be working with the Above the Falls citizen advisory committee (AFCAC) and other stakeholders to advocate for the new organization. Stay tuned to learn about how you can help.
