By the numbers: FMR’s huge 2007 volunteer contributions

Weve been looking at the numbers, and they paint a pretty clear picture: Friends of the Mississippi River simply could not operate without the generous time and talents of volunteers.

In 2007, 2,785 volunteers contributed just over 10,000 hours to better the Mighty Mississippi.

  • Roughly 1,078 people put in 4,388 hours removing invasive species, planting shrubs, collecting native seed, monitoring stream health, pitching in with the Mississippi River Challenge and otherwise assisting in the special places we work in.
  • Some 1,641 volunteers took to the streets for 3,336 hours to paint the reminder message Please Dont Pollute, Drains to the Mississippi River! alongside storm drains.
  • And over 60 volunteers kept FMR going by contributing to the critical behind-the-scenes office work, contributing some 2,286 hours.

To all of our volunteers — thank you! We wish we could name each and every one of you, but we are blessed by your sheer numbers and this is simply not possible. This year, we plan to better show our appreciation with a new volunteer recognition program. We look forward to sending you details in an upcoming edition of Mississippi Messages.
