On December 11, the City of Maplewood permanently protected 62 acres in the Fish Creek Natural Area Greenway, located in the southern portion of the city. This property, surrounded on three sides by Ramsey County open space, is situated along the bluffs of the Mississippi River providing important habitat for animals using the river corridor and great views of the Mississippi Valley. FMR was a project partner, contributing funds from a grant provided by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources. FMR also contributed funding from its own Riverlands Legacy Fund. Other partners in the protection project included Ramsey County, Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District and The Conservation Fund.
Natural and open space areas, like the Fish Creek Natural Area, associated with the Mississippi River and its tributaries are extremely important for the health of the river. Permanently protecting these areas provide many benefits including critical habitat, water filtration, and enhanced quality of life for the residents of the region. FMR works with many communities to safeguard these vital areas in pursuing our goal of achieving an interconnected system of natural corridors associated with this river. We are honored and proud of our role in assisting the City of Maplewood in this project. The City takes their responsibility for stewarding the Mississippi blufflands in their community seriously and we are pleased to have been able to assist them.
