Think nationally, plan locally: How to get involved with Mississippi River planning

Note: This workshop is also being held in St. Paul on March 13.

Join FMR staff for an engaging and informative workshop about city planning for our national park on the Mississippi River, and how you can help.

New state rules require each of the 25 cities and townships along the river within the national park boundary (from Dayton and Ramsey to Hastings) to update their local river corridor plans by the end of 2018. It is important for community members to weigh in at the local level, as these plans will lay the foundation for protecting and enhancing the river within each city for many years to come.

Some things you will learn about and discuss include:
• The local, state and national significance of the Mississippi River
• Why the 72-mile Mississippi River national park corridor was designated here in the Twin Cities
• A brief overview of the new state rules and how they will be applied at the local level
• How to get involved with your local city's planning process
• What to look for in your city's draft river corridor plan documents and maps
• Identifying your favorite river views and other river resources that should be protected in local plans

The workshop is free, but space is limited and preregistration is required. Light dinner will be provided.
