River Story: The River Soothes Alzheimer's Pain

I've been drawn to the Mississippi River a lot recently. My view of the river is from the 4th Floor of the Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis. My husband has been a resident there in memory care for several months. When I'm able to walk him in the halls, I always take him down the corridor to my favorite place - a view of the falls. The part of the river we overlook is the falls at Lock and Dam #1 near the Ford Parkway Bridge that links Minneapolis to Highland Park.

As I look at the falls, there is something about the constant motion and unending flow that I find especially comforting and reassuring. God speaks to me through the river, reminding me that God's love and care, like the river, never stop pouring over me and never run out. The foaming water at the foot of the falls soon dissipates into a smoother flow and reassures me that we will, with God's help, weather the turbulence of my husband's Alzheimer's journey.

When I sit in contemplation at my spot overlooking the river falls, I am quieted and soothed. The river is teaching me to let God carry me. I come there every time I visit my husband and am renewed.

The River Story Map

Created and coordinated by volunteer extraordinaire Michael Bischoff, the River Story Map kicks off FMR's silver anniversary year with 25+ stories of friendship with and connection to the metro Mississippi.  These honest and personal reflections portray the river as a source of intrigue and adventure, a beloved date night venue, and even an unlikely partner in tales of loss and healing. We hope you enjoy them and consider adding your personal story of friendship with the Mississippi River.
