Join us Feb. 20, 2020 at the Ford Area C dumpsite community meeting
As you may have heard, Ford Motor Company owns an unpermitted dumpsite on the Mississippi River floodplain in St. Paul just upstream from Hidden Falls Park and across the river from Minnehaha Falls Park.
Known as Area C, the dumpsite contains a mix of hazardous industrial waste and construction debris, mounded into a pile and covered with dirt and a concrete cap.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) oversees Ford's management of Area C. Thanks to advocacy by FMR and the Capitol Region Watershed District, Ford is expanding its monitoring of the ground and surface water at the site. This includes beginning to test for PFAS (also known as PFCs), a class of chemicals increasingly understood to pose serious environmental and health threats.
A recent Star Tribune article highlighted FMR's concerns, as have several community papers, including the Longfellow Messenger, Midway Monitor and the Villager.
