Justice for Amir Locke
Update: On April 6, 2022, state and county prosecutors cited “insufficient admissible evidence to file criminal charges” against the officer who killed Amir Locke (more from MPR). This underscores the need for systemic change and legislative action. The People of Color and Indigenous Caucus continues to push for legislation addressing no-knock warrants. The bill has made it through the committee process and now awaits a final vote on the House floor. (See their most recent statement.) FMR encourages you to contact your legislators and voice support for their efforts.
---We are deeply saddened and outraged by the killing of Amir Locke at the hands of the Minneapolis Police.
Our thoughts are with Amir Locke’s family and the community. We support and care deeply for our BIPOC staff, board members, partners, friends and family who are navigating yet another tragic killing of a Black person.
Once again, we are in solidarity with those who seek justice and effective reform. It is long overdue.
We're not experts in this arena, but we know that when people of color are made unwelcome or unsafe we cannot have environmental justice or truly public spaces, which are core FMR values (our equity statement). All Minnesotans deserve to be safe and secure in their homes.
FMR will continue to evaluate and support efforts to promote inclusive, accountable and transparent community safety reforms.
The Minnesota Legislature's People of Color and Indigenous Caucus is once again pushing for legislation addressing no-knock warrants. We encourage supporters to contact their legislators to voice support of their efforts.
