Over 230 million pounds of toxics discharged into American waterways

According to a recent report by Environment Minnesota, industrial facilities dumped over 2 million pounds of toxic chemicals into Minnesotas waterways in 2007.

The report: Wasting Our Waterways: Industrial Toxic Pollution and the Unfulfilled Promise of the Clean Water Act, documents 232 millions pounds of chemicals released into 1900 waterways across all 50 states.

The Mississippi River received 24,418 pounds of toxins that impact the human reproductive system – the third highest amount in the nation. The Mississippi River also received the 3rd highest levels of developmental toxins and the 4th highest levels of cancer-causing toxins in the nation.
