River Story: A Great Date Venue

When my boyfriend Ken and I first started dating, one of our occasional outings would be to visit the local parks in his hometown of Brooklyn Park. It was free and there were plenty of them around, each had its own unique element that made it a cool hangout place: a skating rink, large playgrounds, outdoor art, etc. There were always two specifically that I would make a request for: River Park off of 85th and the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park, which has a roaring dam connecting the two cities. And why did I request them? Because both had great views of the river.

Each gave us a different experience; at River Park we were free to be ourselves because we were usually alone-together. He and I would hold hands and walk on and off the paths, staring at the tall trees and opaque water. Once we carved our initials into a thin tree, it was done poorly because his pocketknife was dull and sadly we couldn't find it again the next year.

By contrast, the Coon Rapids Dam was busier and more industrial. Families and joggers strolled down the walkway, sometimes getting a nice spray of the river water while others fishing sat on the beach hoping to lure a bite. It was still a fun place to explore as a couple-just less private.

During these visits, our conversations would start off by talking about things like river sediment levels to wondering how eagles seem to snatch fish from water so gracefully. After we'd established a good walking rhythm we would move on to more personal topics like family, favorite movies or pet peeves.

These conversations were mostly casual and yet it ended up strengthening our core friendship over time.

I've lived in Minnesota my entire life and have visited the Mississippi River several times growing up-however if I were to think back to the most impactful memories I've had with the river it would involve me and Ken walking down a woodchip path, taking in the scenery and each other.
