River Story: The River Restores My Soul

Arial video by Isaiah Bischoff

I have a sacred affinity with the Mississippi River, partly because I grew up within easy reach of its majesty, but also because it has been instrumental in restoring my soul during several turning points in my life.

I do my best thinking and decision-making while walking near the river and I love the bird, tree and animal life that thrives there. I absorb the beauty, I feel the currents and the power, I am in awe of the strength and stability that I sense there.

However, there are a few places that hold special significance. These are the places that hold poignant memories of healing and restoration.

One of my favorite places is on the boardwalk on Nicollet Island just upstream from the Horseshoe Falls. The views of the river, bridges and city skyline are spectacular and there are benches and picnic tables that invite me to sit and ponder life. I call it my holy ritual place. God is most present there, and whenever I need to confirm an important and difficult decision I toss a rock into the river from this place and vow to hold fast to my decision.

Recently I had to withdraw from a long-term friend in her dying process. It was excruciating since I was also her power of attorney. However, her behavior became so excessive and hurtful I had to assure my own safety. I released her with as much dignity and grace as I could muster.

A river visit, along with wise counseling and prayer, helped me move forward with other arrangements for her care so I could do what was healthy and essential for myself. The rock I threw into the current became a symbol of the river's strength for me. It was as if the river absorbed my guilt and sorrow, and restored my soul. Now when I go to this spot I feel relief, compassion and gratitude.

The other reason this place is holy for me is that my dear friend, Michael, and I have chosen this spot as our main Spirit place, the place in which we meet and also the place in which our spirits reside even when we are not there.

So when either of us is there without the other, we can feel each other's presence. When either of us dies, that will be one of the places where we will commune, to feed and restore our souls. Imagine that!

The River Story Map

Created and coordinated by volunteer extraordinaire Michael Bischoff, the River Story Map kicks off FMR's silver anniversary year with 25+ stories of friendship with and connection to the metro Mississippi.  These honest and personal reflections portray the river as a source of intrigue and adventure, a beloved date night venue, and even an unlikely partner in tales of loss and healing. We hope you enjoy them and consider adding your personal story of friendship with the Mississippi River.
