River Story: A Walk in the Frozen Woods

We took a walk in the frozen woods by the Mississippi recently. This entry includes our thoughts and pictures from the walk, along with some broader insight about natural places like the Mississippi and how that relates to ourselves.
“I love the outdoors. I always have. Being in nature gives me a place to relax and reflect. Not only that but it is so beautiful. We need to take more time to appreciate the wilderness, then we will learn that protecting nature is so vital, because we need to protect the Earth, because it is the only one that we have.”

“My dad was on our walk by the river today with my sister. That may seem like a small thing, but I am grateful he has the capacity to do things like go to the river with us and go to the grocery store because my dad was diagnosed with a terminal brain cancer more than two years ago. The one thing that helped him through the pain and the draining treatments was going to the river. The river and nature, in general, has the power to heal and motivate people like my dad. Healing isn't just about doing treatment it's much more than that. I'm so grateful that he is doing so well.”

The River Story Map
Created and coordinated by volunteer extraordinaire Michael Bischoff, the River Story Map kicks off FMR's silver anniversary year with 25+ stories of friendship with and connection to the metro Mississippi. These honest and personal reflections portray the river as a source of intrigue and adventure, a beloved date night venue, and even an unlikely partner in tales of loss and healing. We hope you enjoy them and consider adding your personal story of friendship with the Mississippi River.
