Brown-Bag Lunch: Reconnecting North Mpls to the Mighty Mississippi
As more North Minneapolis riverfront is slated to become parkland, it's important to ensure that new parks and trails are truly accessible to Northside residents. To do this, connections between the community and the riverfront parkland (such as the Broadway bridge over I-94, pictured above) must be improved.
FMR has been working with a researcher from CURA to study Northsiders’ barriers to river access as well as possible ways to overcome them. Join us for a brown-bag lunch featuring a presentation of our findings and discussion about the barriers and opportunities to reconnect North Minneapolis neighborhoods and the Mississippi River.

Tend the rare prairie at Sand Coulee SNA
With its tall grass and wildflowers, the Sand Coulee offers a different kind of beauty. With less than 1 percent of Minnesota native prairie remaining, this highly protected preserve is no less than an oasis in a desert of wildlife habitat – 14 rare plant and animal species call the Coulee home. And with its deep prairie root systems, the Coulee also help filter pollutants from runoff water before it can enter the nearby Vermillion and Mississippi Rivers.

Tend native prairie plants at Old Mill Park
In fall 2014, Hastings High School students and FMR ecologists planted a small prairie at the entrance of Old Mill Park. Volunteers are now needed to work with FMR Lead Ecologist Karen Schik and Stewardship Events Coordinator Adam Flett to help remove weeds and assist with other tending tasks to help these young plants make it through summer.
