ESI guest post: Line 3 and Line 5 — effects on Indigenous people, native food and water

Norijah, a 2023 Environmental Stewardship Institute (ESI) fellow

This is a guest post from Norijah, a 2023 Environmental Stewardship Institute (ESI) fellow. ESI fellows design and carry out a capstone project during a six-week summer program. Norijah created a presentation about Line 3 and Line 5 based on interviews and research. (Note: Opinions expressed in ESI projects are those of the program participant and do not necessarily represent those of FMR.)

For my project, I made a slideshow explaining the impact of Line 3 replacement and the making of Line 5 from different points of view — from protesters to lawyers to pipeline workers.

You can see my slides here.

Why I chose this project

I chose to do this project because hearing about Line 3, but not understanding it, was a bit confusing. When I did learn about the concerns and health risks, I pushed myself to learn more and then spread awareness on Line 3. I also learned about Line 5 — a new pipeline they are trying to build. Pipelines can affect so many people's lives and health.

What I hope you take away

Line 3 and Line 5 are pipelines owned by a pipeline company called Enbridge. Enbridge is a company with many records of pipeline spills from gas to oil — causing accidents including deaths. I want to spread awareness to Stop Line 5 in Michigan.

FMR created the Environmental Stewardship Institute to address the gap between environmental education and a career path in the environmental field. We hold a summer intensive program and a school-year youth advisory council. Learn more about the 2023 ESI summer program, including other final project highlights.

FMR's Environmental Stewardship Insitute is part of our larger Stewardship & Education program. Check out our other opportunities for youth and for all ages to get involved with FMR.
