Welcome Intern Nels Dyste!

FMR Conservation and Restoration Intern Nels Dyste

Nels Dyste recently came on board as FMRs Conservation and Restoration Intern. Luckily for us, hes equally as comfortable behind a desk as he is hauling tools for hands-on events, and full of vim and vigor.

While the snow falls, Nels is helping to survey members of FMRs Heritage Land Registry — an honor roll of landowners who volunteer to protect their land — regarding possible future conservation measures and restoration efforts. This spring, he will change roles, becoming a staffer at FMRs habitat restoration and educational events. (Hell be the friendly young man lugging tools or perhaps greeting you with a clipboard in hand, ready to sign you in.)

Nels background is a perfect fit for such a combination of indoor and outdoor work. In 2008, he earned his undergraduate degree in political science from Saint Olaf College, where he completed research projects on the ethics of land conservation and an examination of Aldo Leopolds land ethic in todays market system. Beyond the classroom, he spent a winter learning and teaching adaptive skiing techniques to people with a wide variety of ability levels at the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center, and has also designed and implemented camp programs for kids of all ages with special medical and developmental needs.

Currently, he is working with Conservation Director Tom Lewanski, who has found this new intern to be full of energy, Hes very motivated and has jumped right in, said Lewanski. He did, however, note one potential problem in working with Nels. He may finish this project sooner than anticipated, he said.

Dont worry, Nels, well keep you busy. And, thank you for coming on board with FMR.
