Quote: The Mississippi River is the most important natural feature in our region. It needs a responsible steward. FMR is that steward.

Hobbies: Beekeeper, avid skier, canoeing, camping.

Interesting book: Omnivore's Dilemma, by Michael Pollan. Everyone should read it. It raises questions we all need to think about.

Favorite Mississippi River location: A cliff band along the edge of Grey Cloud Island that you can paddle underneath if you're on the main stem of the river. It's unique and picturesque.

Conservation/Environmental heroes: Frederick Law Olmsted, Jens Jensen, Sigurd Olson, Aldo Leopold.

Last memorable vacation: Summer of 2006, when my wife and I took our then 4- and 6-year-old kids to Alaska's Kenai Fjords National Park. It's an amazing place.
