Tend a restored oak savanna at Davis Farm Park

Oak savanna at Davis Farm Park

Volunteers will help restore oak savanna at Davis Farm Park in Otsego.

Davis Farm Park in the City of Otsego lies along a stretch of Mississippi River backchannel north of the Twin Cities. The park is across from one of the islands that make up the Mississippi River Islands Scientific and Natural Area, a string of riverine islands within a 7-mile stretch of the Mississippi.

This is a new site for FMR as of 2024. As we restore a remnant oak savanna in the park, we need to remove invasive garlic mustard. At this event, we'll hand-pull the garlic mustard from a 2-acre flat area just off a mowed trail. Removing garlic mustard will slow its aggressive spread and give native plants a chance to become established and create improved habitat.

All are welcome, but capacity is limited and registration is required. As always, all tools and training will be provided, and volunteers are encouraged to work at their own pace and comfort level.

Accessibility

A quarter-mile walk on a slightly rolling mowed trail will take us to our work area at Davis Farm Park. Removing garlic mustard is a lower-intensity activity that can be done while bending or sitting. The work area does not have trails and has short stumps and a few fallen logs. There are no restroom facilities at Davis Farm Park, and the nearest restroom is 4 miles east at 9025 Quaday Avenue, Otsego.
