MPR News: Climate change driving toxic algae blooms

As our climate warms, the potential for toxic algae blooms increases.

Minnesota Public Radio recently highlighted this connection and its impact on water quality and drinking water across the nation. 

The blooms, which harm wildlife, pets and humans, have made headlines in Ohio, New York, Minnesota, Oregon and beyond in recent years.

Changing rainfall patterns lead to more intense storms that wash more pollutants off the land and into lakes and rivers. Higher temps and more frequent droughts also lead to warmer, shallower waters, which fuel the growth of toxic algae.
