Sign the petition: It's time for MN to salt smart for the river
Deicing salts applied to parking lots and walkways can melt snow and ice and keep us safe in winter. However, excess salts eventually wash into our waters where they harm fish, mussels and other river life. They also contaminate wells that supply drinking water in rural areas.
Unfortunately, salt is a permanent pollutant. Just 1 teaspoon of road salt irreversibly pollutes 5 gallons of water.
That's why passing salt or chloride pollution legislation is a longstanding FMR priority.
Over the years, the Minnesota Legislature has taken some FMR-backed steps to reduce salt contamination.
Currently, legislators are deciding whether to establish voluntary training programs and liability incentives for commercial salt and de-icing applicators through the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
To let legislators know that you support smart salting measures like this and future measures to reduce salt pollution and keep our communities safe and our river healthy, sign the petition below today.
Action-takers will also be signed up as River Guardians to receive select, occasional messages when the river needs your voice the most. (We work hard not to spam and make it easy to unsubscribe.)
