ESI guest post: Microplastics in the environment

Ishaan Goyal

Ishaan Goyal, a 2023 Environmental Stewardship Institute (ESI) fellow

This is a guest post from Ishaan Goyal, a 2023 Environmental Stewardship Institute (ESI) fellow. ESI fellows design and carry out a capstone project during a six-week summer program. Ishaan Goyal researched and created a presentation about microplastics in the environment, the problem and its solutions. (Note: Opinions expressed in ESI projects are those of the program participant and do not necessarily represent those of FMR.)

My project is about microplastics and their effects on the environment. Check out my presentation slides.

Why I chose this project

I chose this project because even though plastics are widely talked about, microplastics are much less known about. I wanted to educate people about microplastics and help reduce microplastic pollution.

What I hope you take away

Microplastics are small and a big problem. When they accumulate, they can disrupt ecosystems. One simple thing you can do to help is think about what you use and buy like plastic bags, clothes and personal care products.

FMR created the Environmental Stewardship Institute to address the gap between environmental education and a career path in the environmental field. We hold a summer intensive program and a school-year youth advisory council. Learn more about the 2023 ESI summer program, including other final project highlights.

FMR's Environmental Stewardship Insitute is part of our larger Stewardship & Education program. Check out our other opportunities for youth and for all ages to get involved with FMR.
