Seed collection at Vermillion River Linear Park [FULL]
Our work takes place on Dakota homelands. Learn more.
--
Join us for an evening of collecting and distributing native seed at Vermillion River Linear Park, a beautiful 60-acre park in the heart of Hastings and part of a corridor of green space that runs through the city. This park flanks the Vermillion River, a cold prairie stream in the heart of Dakota County and a major tributary of the Mississippi, recognized for trophy brown trout.
After a brief introduction and training, volunteers will collect seeds from important, habitat-creating plants. Then, we'll distribute the seeds in areas where invasive species have recently been removed, and areas that need more native cover. Spreading these seeds now means a healthy, diverse array of plants ready to grow next spring.
All are welcome, however, capacity is limited and registration is required. All supplies and training will be provided and volunteers will work closely with FMR staff. This event is part of the Vermillion Stewards program, engaging Vermillion River Watershed residents to learn about the local watershed while working to protect and enhance its unique natural resources.
Accessibility
Volunteers will be working on level ground but uneven terrain. Some areas of the worksite can be accessed by paved trails. Collecting and spreading seed are both lower-intensity activities that can be done at your own pace.
