Bill introduced to grow the industry for clean-water crops
A major legislative priority for FMR this year is investing in the growth of small businesses that make clean-water crops into delicious products for all to enjoy.
Good news from the State Capitol!
On the first day of Minnesota's 2022 legislative session, Rep. Todd Lippert and Rep. Rick Hansen introduced a bill to aid small businesses focused on clean-water crops, marking progress on a major FMR priority.
House File 2720 would provide grants to the value chain companies (such as processors and distributors) that bring us Kernza perennial grain, hazelnuts, elderberries and other sustainability-minded products. Value chain development is crucial to building the markets that will ultimately drive the success of these crops, alongside critical funding for research and design, and farm support programs. (Read more about the need for value chain development and what it could yield for the economy and the river.)
FMR is working diligently with our partners to advocate for this measure at the Legislature. We'll be sure to let our River Guardians know when it's time to support the bill. Meanwhile, you can support the House Climate Action Plan today, which calls for important investments in the success of clean-water crops and continuous living cover.
