Long-awaited DNR carp action plan released

Update Feb. 6, 2024: Read our full response to the updated plan here.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) just released its long-awaited Minnesota Invasive Carp Action Plan.

For years, FMR and the Stop Carp Coalition have advocated an update to the DNR's outdated plan. We're seeing more and more invasive carp in the southern stretch of Minnesota's Mississippi River. If we don't act now, invasive carp will have a chance to establish breeding populations in the Mississippi River and all the waters it connects, harming ecosystems and the communities the river supports.

Now, after FMR participated in a months-long stakeholder process with researchers, agency experts and fellow advocates, the DNR has pulled together a roadmap for invasive carp prevention and management. Is it enough?

FMR's response and opportunities to learn more

We're still reading through the document, but so far we're pleased the plan includes a robust set of science-based strategies including deterrents, fishing, tracking and research.

We want to work with the DNR to secure full funding for these activities, including urgent funding for a deterrent at Lock and Dam 5. We're eager to move from study to action right away.

We'll have more to say after a thorough analysis. For now, be sure to register for one of our upcoming invasive carp community action meetings.

At the following three in-person meetings and one livestream, the DNR will present the plan. Attendees will be able to ask questions and share their feedback. And FMR and our cohost Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance will share how you can get involved in advocacy this legislative session.

Register below for the meeting you plan to attend:

Jan. 24 — Red Wing, MN

Jan. 30 — St. Paul, MN (in person)

Jan. 30 — St. Paul, MN (virtual livestream)

Feb. 1 — Winona, MN
