Gov. Dayton vetoes awful environmental bill! (But another is on the way.)

Friday, May 12, Gov. Mark Dayton vetoed a historically bad omnibus environment bill. It sought to give polluters the right to write their own environmental impact statements, slashed funding for environmental agencies and even prevented cities from banning plastic bags. In short, it threatened to undermine Minnesota’s long tradition of protecting the water we drink and the air we breathe.

Press statement re: the Governor’s Veto

FMR thanks Gov. Mark Dayton for vetoing the omnibus environment and natural resources finance and policy bill. Its unprecedented budget and policy rollbacks would have harmed Minnesota’s great outdoors, contrary to the wishes of Minnesotans across the state.

Transition point for N Mpls river reconnection work

N. Mpls Reconnect March Meeting

Over 60 Northsiders joined us to learn about and discuss ways to reconnect North Minneapolis and the Mighty Mississippi in March 2017.

The FMR advocacy crew is switching gears. After spending 2016 researching how to better connect North Minneapolis with the Mississippi River we're shifting to advocating for those community-identified changes. We marked this transition with a final presentation by FMR's CURA research assistant Eric King and a panel discussion with attendees, covering everything from potential gentrification to a possible land-bridge over Interstate 94.

Bill seeks to have judges, not experts, determine MN's water policies

The federal Clean Water Act requires Minnesota to develop water quality standards to protect Minnesota’s waters from pollution. Standards are technical and require input from the state’s most expert water quality scientists. Under existing law, this is done by scientists employed by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, along with outside experts they consult, following Minnesota’s rulemaking procedures.

Reconnecting North Minneapolis to the Mighty Mississippi

Do you like to use the parks and trails along the Mississippi River? Are you excited about the new parkland coming to the riverfront in North Minneapolis? We are, too! We also want it to be safe and easy for residents and other community members to walk or bike between the existing North Minneapolis neighborhoods and this new parkland (and vice versa).
